What is a Flood?

A flood happens when water covers land that is normally dry. For it to count as a flood, the water must:

  • Cover two neighboring properties or at least two acres of land.
  • Come from outside your home and flow over the ground before entering.

Most people think of floods from rivers, heavy rain, or ocean storms, but they can also come from:

  • A water main breaking
  • A dam releasing water
  • Other man-made accidents

If water starts inside your home (like a broken pipe in the wall), it does NOT count as a flood. If it comes from outside and moves across the ground, it DOES count.
